No, It’s Not Enough to Be a Writer

The grim unfortunate reality of today’s writing world is that writers also need to be marketers. It’s like one cannot go without the other.

And the more I think about the marketing part of being a writer, the more shivers run down my spine.

I have a confession to make: Marketing is a tedious and laborious process that sucks the energy out of me. And I don’t enjoy it as much as writing does. But I know without it, I’m like a painter without a canvass.

For a long time, I had a hard time accepting it. Not because I didn’t want to accept it, but because I thought being a writer is enough and if you’ve got enough skills or talent, one way or another, people will discover your work and you’re good to go.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough. These days you have to be a writer and a marketer to an equal degree. The truth is, no one will ever know you or hear about you unless you make yourself known. Who cares that you’re sitting there cooped up in front of your computer in your own office space. You must break your tiny bubble and show what you’ve got to the world.

As a writer, you have to be that nagging kid who comes to the neighbor’s door and asks for candy. Except, you’re not a kid and you’re not asking for…
