Please Don’t Send Me Follow Requests

I don’t play follow-for-follow games

On Medium, I often get follow requests from newbie writers. They follow you and then expect you to return the favor.

News flash alert: I don’t engage in follow-for-follow games. I find it disingenuous to follow someone back because they followed me.

For those who don’t know: During my writing journey, I’ve only followed people whose work genuinely appealed to me. I like to read writers I can relate to and whose work resonates with me.

So when someone sends me a request to follow them back because they just followed me, I shouldn’t feel obligated to return the favor. I didn’t ask you to follow me in the first place.

That said, don’t ever expect me to blindly follow you like a robot because you’ve just sent me a follow request. Unless I read some of your work and I like what you wrote, I can’t follow you back. I do not participate in fake follower scams.

People following other people on Medium should be based on genuine engagement — not fake following. Blindly following someone back is not how you can grow as a writer.

Medium is all about community and engagement and you can only attract your loyal tribe with quality work.
