Ukraine Crisis: What Could Happen Next

The war continues as Russian forces advance their troops into Kyiv

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the gunfire and shelling continued as Russian troops advance further into Kyiv. Refugees are fleeing the country in large numbers while more people pick up arms to defend their country.

Despite an incredibly strong Russian army and strategic planning that Putin planned in great detail, his troops are facing setbacks.

For one, he didn’t think the victory would be so hard to achieve. He may have thought that it would take him around 2–4 days to take over Ukraine. But his calculations were wrong. One thing he didn’t foresee is the incredible bravery and resistance of the Ukrainian soldiers in defending their homeland.

Nor did he expect Ukraine to receive so much help and support from the U.S. and NATO.

As far as sanctions, Putin saw them coming but as we see they didn’t deter him from invasion. He knew he’d be able to temporarily shield himself from the financial blows. He relied on large reserves of oil and currency to give him a cushion and keep his country afloat during the war.

But sanctions will slowly but surely hurt the Russian economy in the long term. The ruble has already plunged in value and…
